President’s Remarks

We have had a great time since the last Bulletin. The District conference on 24th- 26th November 2008 lived up to expectations with all our 25 delegates enjoying being the first guests in the new Ramada Southport Hotel immediately adjoining the conference hall. A benefit as the weather was so wet and windy!

Alvin Stardust was the entertainer and Rochdale were seated on the front row and some of our ladies were later photographed with him.

On Sunday 2nd November 2008 we enjoyed an excellent Brass Band Concert from Grimethorpe Colliery Band who told me afterwards that they had enjoyed the event and that the audience was fantastic. We must have sold over 400 tickets and made over £4,000 profit to be shared between the Band and our Rotary Charities. Well done all concerned and in particular Tom Hobson.

I was 62 on the 14th November 2008, a birthday which I am pleased to share with the younger Prince of Wales. We also had a party but ours was at the Richmond Hall with Glenn Philips (the Piano Man) and all had a most enjoyable evening, complete with birthday cake. The event made £600 profit for Rotary and Innerwheel International Projects.

Three days later, on Monday 17th November 2008, it was our club’s Charter Night, our 82nd birthday and what could be the high point of my year as President. All went as planned as 105 members and guests sat down to an excellent meal. Our most recent member, Anneliese McArdle ably read the Charter and then Vice President Elvet Smith Proposed the Toast to Rotary International to which District Governor Elect Elizabeth Tatman responded.

President John with Jack Howarth JP and Geoff Howard JP, recipients of Paul Harris Fellowships at Charter Night.

Past District Governor Norman Wellens, President of our daughter club Middleton, proposed our health. I was privileged to respond and in doing so performed a duty which had only been done previously in our club on three earlier occasions in that I was able to honour two of our most experienced and valued members, Jack Howorth JP and Geoff Howard JP, by carrying out Council’s decision to award them Paul Harris Fellowships. I think both were surprised and both were pleased that we had recognised their contribution to our club.

I then proposed a toast to our guests and my main guest, former member David Lewis, entertained us in the style which won him the Wit of Wits Competition. I believe that he genuinely enjoyed himself and renewed friendships which he made before he left the club to live in France. To all former members who read this do remember that once a member of the Rotary Club of Rochdale, you are always a friend and welcome at any of our meetings.

And so, as we head towards Christmas the club and its members have much to do. Service before Self is always at the top of our agenda but there is nothing to say that we should not enjoy ourselves at the same time.

President
