Dementia is a growing problem in our community ,a brain disorder showing up in mid to later life causing gradual loss of memory and reasoning .Memory for new events are lost with close relatives noticing that their loved ones are asking questions about what's happened even a few moments ago.Past memory from years ago is usually well preserved.
Research is on going with studies into the cause of the disease with questions on possible chemical or viral brain damage;genetic possible family links .More studies are ongoing into treatments to stimulate brain activity, including drugs and various behavioural treatments which can also help relatives to help maintain a relatively normal life. The Alzheimer's society has a helpline to give advice to sufferers and carers.
A combination of genetic tests, memory tests to pick up early signs of the disorder and treatment with drugs ,behavioral therapy and community support looks the way forward in this frustrating unpleasant condition in our older population.
With various fundraising events both in the Rotary club and events in the Rochdale community the Charity will be given funds to help in a most worthwhile cause
